Beckford’s Tower: Enlightened art and dark histories

Beckford’s Tower once housed one of the greatest collections of art, furniture and books in Georgian England, as the country retreat of William Beckford.

The Beckford’s Tower app guides visitors on a tour around 7 essential features of the grounds, revealing stories about its history and restoration through interviews and images. Each location also has bonus audio and transcriptions that dig deeper into the darker aspects of Beckford and the site’s history.

Alternatively, the family trail provides child friendly information about each of the 7 stops, along with a quiz and spotters’ challenge to entertain and engage visitors of all ages.

In addition to free trials in the grounds, Bath Preservation Trust utilised the Place Experience Platform to deliver extra features for paying visitors to the Tower, such as augmented reality recreations of original interiors, and artefacts presented in 360-degree photogrammetry.

Collaborating with our local communities and advisors we have worked together to create an expansive, interesting and inclusive experience; this tower used to be a space reserved only for one privileged man, now we want everyone to feel welcome here.
