Maidstone Trails: mad priests, Samuel Pepys and Iggy the dinosaur

Maidstone is the historic County Town of Kent, and boasts a wide range of captivating attractions and rich narratives. This pocket guide encourages visitors to explore the streets, history and unique identity of the town. Through location-based audio and visual assets, Maidstone Borough Council engages audiences with stories of witches, mad priests, and an industrial heritage which has made global impacts. The app relinks museum items to their relevant locations, forging vibrant connections between visitors, stories, artefacts and the town.

Local place managers have also curated nature trails, public art and dinosaur sculpture hunts to suit all ages, providing immersive experiences beyond conventional sightseeing. They have used the Place Experience Platform to show Maidstone’s impact on inspiring luminaries such as Samuel Pepys, Charles Dickens and David Bowie, enriching visitors’ understanding of the town’s cultural significance.

Maidstone Trails is funded by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

So much information about Maidstone’s past! So much I didn’t know, great to browse through from your chair, and now looking forward to getting out there and following the trails. A fun way to get the kids out, educational without them knowing it!
